Goodbye Art – Jimi Hendrix on fire, frozen Amy Winehouse or what can you do with fat out of McDonald’s french fries?

Posted in Art, Fashion, Fun, Music, Uncategorized by stylecouch on September 3, 2009

If you like to stop for street artists, in order to spend some moments on their work, than you will love the Phil Hansen! His excellent talent in combining art with the normal live, is brilliant. But have a look on his art – I have decided on 3 videos, but on his website and on youtube you will find many, many more. I am sure you will love!

About Phil Hansen:

His breakthrough piece was a time-lapse video of a two-day project called Influences. He painted thirty pictures on his torso, one over the other, each picture representing an influence in his life. After it was completed, he peeled the layer off and cut a silhouette of his own profile. The uploaded video was streamed more than a million times on the Web, with process and final piece clearly revealed.

He began a project called Goodbye Art to help him be more spontaneous. The difference, however, lay in the fact that after the process was completed and a final piece was obtained, he destroyed all traces of it except for a photograph. The video showing his process and the final result was uploaded on his YouTube user page.

Do not chuck your old music tapes!

Posted in Art, Fashion, Music, Uncategorized by stylecouch on August 24, 2009

For sure in times of ipods and iphones it takes some time, even to remember if there are still any tapes in dusty packing cases, somewhere in the last corner in the basement. The turkish designer Ersinhan Ersin seems to found his old Compact Cassettes again, reactivated them and created some wonderful with it – he called it “tapeography”!

Rock & Roll T-Shirts – more than just fashion statements

Posted in Art, Fashion, Graphic design, Music by stylecouch on August 23, 2009

Launched in 2005, Worn Free is a rock and roll T-shirt label with a simple mission: to resurrect the coolest shirts of all time. Worn Free reproduces original tees famously worn by such rock legends as John Lennon, Joey Ramone, Frank Zappa, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Gram Parsons, Johnny Ramone and Joan Jett, among others – and regularly adds fantastic new images (of fantastic old shirts) to its catalog. Celebrating punk fury, hippie utopianism, psychedelic excess and art-pop whimsy – not to mention the eye-popping graphics of celebrated artists like John Van Hamersveld – Worn Free shirts express the insurrectionary spirit of rock and roll in all its forms.

Emblazoned with slogans and images that form a secret history of cool, Worn Free T-shirts aren’t just fashion statements – they’re cultural signposts, part of a revolutionary past that laid the groundwork for modern pop culture … which makes them every bit as relevant today as they were in the turbulent, boundary-smashing ’60s and ’70s. That’s why you’ll see Worn Free shirts adorning today’s trendsetters – like Jennifer Aniston, Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher, The O.C.’s Mischa Barton, new Superman Brandon Routh, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols, “Jonesy’s Jukebox”), buzz band The Kaiser Chiefs, rising star Sienna Miller, country phenom Keith Urban, Heather Graham and many others.

About the Ramones:

.

When the Ramones hit the scene in 1974, people didn’t know how to take them, despite the fact that they weren’t really doing anything new. Essentially, the band was taking ‘50s and ‘60s pop music, but playing it much louder and faster. They were taking the music that influenced them, and in turn, helped to create and influence the American (and international) punk scene forevermore. When the band formed, he said, “I stopped listening to everything.” Johnny’s “Chatterbox” T-shirt gives props to the New York Dolls’ single of the same name, taken from the band’s second record, “Too Much Too Soon.” Johnny was wearing the T-Shirt as was on a concert in Denmark 1977.

COOL COVER ALBUM CHOSEN BY COVER!

Posted in Graphic design, Music by stylecouch on July 10, 2009

By coincidence I found this fabulous album in Hamburg’s lovely and edgy St Pauli area. My first interest was created just by watching the great graphic cover – but  I need to say that is is definitely matching the contents of it!  Nouvelle Vague, the French band that conquered the world with bossa nova covers of punk and new wave classics, return in time for summer with their third album, NV3. Fantastic cover versions dominated by the amazing vocal of Melanie Pain. As a huge fan of Depeche Mode I have to recommend ‘Master of Servant’, featuring Martin Gore, however it is hard to choose among the absolutely great songs in this album. What is better than finding new groovy music for the weekend??

The legendary Rolling Stones leaded by the front singer Mick Jagger and the characteristic guitarist Keith Richard did not only have a good taste of music but also their choice of women was very stylish! In the drug influenced rock ‘n’ roll period of the 60s Marianne Faithful, singer an actress and Anita Pallenberg, model, actress and designer were the muses of the stones. Anita Pallenberg left her boyfriend Brian Jones for another Stones member; Keith Richard with whom she had three children. Rumours said she also had a brief affair with Mick Jagger. Marianne Faithful had a relationship with Mick Jagger . The times were hectic and influenced by drugs, illness and caos, however the women managed to look fabulous – actually  on a level that make the still inspiring and essential icons for the fashion industry. Noting their cool bohemian look I can imagine where style icons as Sienna Miller, Kate Moss etc get their inspiration.

MARIE FISKER’S ROCK EDGY VOCAL

billede-72Marie Fisker

Garage rock and fabulous blues versions from the cool and played down Danish Marie Fisker , who is mostly known together with Kira Skov. She is now out with her own EP. The atmosphere is reminding me on the David Lynch’s Twin Peaks environment mixed with my favorite music by Catpower. With clear inspiartion by Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and Hope Sandoval from Mazzy  Star , Marie Fisker is bringing us into her wonderful music univers. Mentioning Kira Skov I have to recommend ther two girls’ amazing version of the ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Listen in youtube here. This song was originally made by Ewan MacColl in the 1950s but the version by the legendary Johnny Cash is probably the most known. Listen to her new songs on my space here  ‘Little Light Lit’ is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard recently.

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE

Posted in Music by stylecouch on March 17, 2009

Even without having an album out,  the eccentric folk-art pop band Florence and the Machine is predicted to be a huge succes this year. This year they won the Critics’ Choice award – Brit Awards’ new nomination which is only given to a bands that have not sent out their debut album yet. Recently the band joined quite good company in the NME Awards Tour together with Glasvegas,Friendly Fires and White Lies

In front is the charismatic Florence Welch who is an amazing performer and moreover she is a fabulous writer – her lyrics are not the most realistic but crazy fantasy stories. While spreading out her intense voice she is hitting the big drum or jumping energic around on the stage. She is absolutely one to watch!
