Woody Allen, who directed her in Stardust Memories, once said that his ideal dinner companions would be Charlotte Rampling and Franz Kafka! Charlotte Rampling started her career as a teenage model featuring her sexy and boyish look that was favoured by the times. She also appeared in several Helmut Newton shoots—most notoriously smoking and drinking at the Hôtel Nord-Pinus in a 1973 nude portrait. Rampling’s career has got a revival recently; in 2003 her movie Swimming Pool became a succes and in 2004 she was posing together with photographer Juergen Teller in Marc Jacobs’ spring ad campaign. Just showing that hear beauty and power only grow more potent despite her age!
Many of my favorites and most inspiring photos are shot by the American photographer Steven Meisel – very often for US and Italian vogue – but among them also beautiful pictures of his friend Madonna and the latest campaign for Lanvin.
I love these 60s pictures by the German fotographer F.C Gundlach. Wish I could get the striped dress and the black swim suit right now!!!
In the 1920s Henri Lartigue made a selection of photographs of the commediennes and chanteuses who dominated the Paris night life. All the women are smoking in the pictures. There is a special atmosphere and power around these women. Nowadays everyone has comments for fashion pictures – either it is the clothes, the model, the light….and especilly when it comes to cigarettes the discussion could easily raise to the red zone! Wether you like smoking or cigarettes or not, I definitely think there is still something powerful, sexy and sophisticated in the combination of cigarettes and fashion. Perhaps what is touching me is also the feeling of not always being so correct…
